Auto Body Repair Tools
Introduction
Before any repair procedure can be carried out on a given panel, the inner and outer surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned; deadeners, underseal and other foreign matter that might interfere with the application of corrective forces must be removed.
Most of the ant drumming and other undercoating used today can be removed by scraper or putty knife after softening by the application of heat to the outside of the panel. The outside of the panel should be washed down with clean water and any traces of oil, road tar or asphalt, removed with a solvent soaked rag.
This panel preparation will make hand tool straightening more effective coupled with a reduction in wear and tear on the dollies etc to be employed. The first step in the restoration sequence is to unfold the valleys V channels and buckles in the indirect damaged area as gently as possible without further stretching or reforming as they are brought up to something like their original position and contours. They have not been stretched beyond the elastic limit, but are held by the ridges at the outer edges of the damaged area. The reshaping should continue with alternative working on the ridges and the low area as the metal is slowly raised up into line with the surrounding sheet.
Health and Safety at Work
Each tool carries with it certain safety warnings which outline any potential danger but it is worth emphasizing such dangers. The first section deals with panel beating, hammers and dollies figuring very prominently. For this work one should always wear goggles. Hammers are very hard and it misused, whether accidentally or otherwise, may easily chip causing flying splinters. The condition of all tools should be constantly maintained and checked. E.g. a hammer shaft must be secured; there must be no cracks in the striking faces or chips of any description. Panel beating tools must only be used for the purpose for which they are intended, damage and injury may result in any misuse situation. The sheet metal working section covers a wider range of tools for working of sheet metal on and off the vehicle. Sheet metal is almost always sharp along one or more edges and so it is essential that the user wears strong industrial quality gloves when handling sheet metal.
